"The CTC team is skilled and sensitive. They wrap around you and your kiddo.
It is a very special place."
-Melissa Gillett
At age 2, Arlo was diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome. His symptoms included delayed speech, difficulty with eating solid foods, and various sensory challenges.
Seeking a diagnosis was a long process, but the CTC was behind us the entire time.
Within weeks of seeking help from the CTC, his neck tightness was greatly improved with physiotherapy. When we introduced solid food he struggled with swallowing. He had a feeding assessment with Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech Therapy. He has continued to received OT and Speech Therapy due to fine motor and speech delays. The therapists created a comfortable environment for him where he felt safe and supported.
I work at the CTC, but that professional experience went out the door when it came to actually being a mom of a special needs son. My CTC colleagues treated me as a mom who needed help and support. They were patient, explained everything to me, and answered all of my questions. They also helped me connect the dots to ensure that Arlo got the diagnosis, therapies, and services he needed.
The CTC offers services that go beyond therapy.
Physiotherapy has helped to secure an adapted bike for Arlo, which he loves. The CTC pool is warmer than usual, so he can concentrate on his body movement and not about being in cool water. The whole Centre is thoughtfully laid out so children of all abilities
can participate in all kinds of activities.
It’s been wonderful watching my little boy learn and experience new things, finding so many joys in life, both big and small. It makes my husband and I so happy. As a mom, a dad, a caregiver, you can call the CTC and self-refer if you have concerns about your child. There is someone waiting to help you. Just call.
